I have been doing the marketing on my own but was curious as to what works best for people in that area. I do alot of social media, word of mouth, news papers, I even had the Maine Ghosthunters at our house (long story and yes a book on that) and they spread the word on their radio pod cast. I am pretty much a recluse in the middle of nowhere and would like to know if people could share what works best for them. I will certainly add more ideas as well here.

brooksie,
I'm doing pretty much the same as you but I did check around at bookstores in my area, regarding book signings for my paperbacks (published through Amazon - CreateSpace : POD). All of them said they did schedule these for authors whose books they don't currrently carry, including POD ones. I was surprized by this but I suppose they like anything that draws visitors into their stores.
The stores I'm talking about are large -- not small independents that get very small traffic. No offense to small stores but an author could sit in one of these all day, twiddling their thumbs. Small stores definitely serve thier purposes but author signings isn't a strong point for them.
I have some business books out that promote entrepreneurship and I had two large stores tell me they would schedule a book signing date for me. They would probably promote it on their website but I would have to pay for any newspaper ads or they might go dutch on some advertising.
The thing is that I'm not good with public appearances -- they make me very nervous (kind of phobic). Still, they are obiously a way to get your physical books into more hands, which also boosts word of mouth promotion.

I am glad you posted that. I did one book signing a few years ago at a small local book store in Farmington, Maine-trust me-cant get any smaller that that store in the middle of the mountains of Maine. It is local for me though as the big stores are quite a journey to get to from here. I have no trouble with public appearances but was traumatized by that one!lol! I would do others and I like your advice to hit the big stores on that one. If you need any tips on public apprarances, I would be happy to help and lend some advice. I have spoken in front of thousands before-long story. I have worked with the public for most of my working career in the insurance and legal fields. I have been so busy writing I sort of became a hermit here. Great advice though, I will look into that myself. I have also heard of authors getting together for support on those...We are all very geograpohically far from each other on here-but it is a thought, if you have an author friend who is close to you....

I've been following articles and blogs on this subject as well as all the Mark Coker pamplets and the best selling technique seems to be word of mouth from readers.
